European Championships

20th May 2008, Racing

I have just returned from Milan – what a weekend!! It was Olympic qualification and the first big International regatta of the year so the first test of how my K1 was going. It got of to an amazing start – I won my heat in the K1 500m which meant I went directly to the final. I had a great race and everything I had practiced in training came together. This meant that I had a day off racing on Friday, which was a bit strange but a great situation to be in! I raced 200m heats on Saturday and qualified directly to the final again – so everything was going to plan.

Sunday was finals day, the 500m was first up and I had a good race but not as good as in the semi, I finished 6th which was a great start to the year and it guaranteed me my Olympic place which I was thrilled about. The 200m event was in the afternoon so I had a couple of hours to recover. I was in a confident mood for the 200m, my boat was running well and so I went for it, and I won!!!!! I couldn’t quite believe it but I was EUROPEAN champion!! It was amazing and a brilliant end to the regatta. It was a great feeling to finally be standing on the top of the rostrum with the national anthem being played.
